SCORE AND SCRIPT
Two templates were derived from a single-page comic. 26 artists each received one of these templates, and created a new single-page comic in response. They were not allowed to see the original page, or each other’s works-in-progress. Score and Script was first exhibited at the Centre for Recent Drawing. Did the results throw any light on the mysteries of the art of cartooning? Comics critic Andy Oliver thought so. Read the commentary and judge for yourself.

4-page sample. The full strip appears in So I Guess My Body Pretty Much Hates Me Now,
an autobiographical comic about living with multiple sclerosis that was voted “Best One-Shot” in the 2020 Broken Frontier awards. Thanks, Broken Frontier! This ongoing project
started life during a postdoctoral residency in University of the Arts London’s
Archives and Special Collections Centre at London College of Communication. A more recent strip was commissioned for the International Graphic Novels and Comics
Conference 2020, and the next one will be appearing soon in Biography: An
Interdisciplinary Quarterly.

ROBERT IRWIN AND THE INEVITABLY SIGNIFYING DISCS

A story about the impossibility of escaping symbolism. The plot, and some of the text, is taken from Lawrence Weschler’s biography of Robert Irwin, Seeing Is Forgetting The Name Of The Thing One Sees. The idea of making “sequential” and “gestalt” versions of the same plot came from analysing the pages produced by my collaborators on Score And Script.

Each of the A0 prints illustrates one of the 9 verses in Genesis 11 that make up the story:
